Best Outcomes 2023: Complications From Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe to the surprising Jacob & Co.
Twenty-three is the year when familiar complications are reimagined. What stands out among complications this year is good execution. Granted, most of them are incremental, except maybe the Audemars Piguet Universelle, but classic complications done well are arguably better than novel creations done poorly.
We asked team members familiar with this year's complications for their favorite products, and here are the results.
Mountain Venus
The most complex and impressive (multiple) complications of the year come from a surprising brand: Audemars Piguet. While it’s the Royal Oak Travis Scott and the Royal Oak Concept “Spider-Man” that grab the headlines, from a watchmaking perspective, the Code 11:59 Universelle is undoubtedly the AP’s most important watch of the year.
Universelle manages to pack nearly two dozen complications into a case that is just 42 mm wide and 15.55 mm high, including the Grande Sonnerie, a perpetual calendar, a split-seconds chronograph and, especially, the automatic winding mechanism, which is 42 mm wide and 15.55 mm high. Measured by a 15.55mm tall case – a huge complication. By comparison, the FP Journe Astronomic measures 44mm x 13.7mm, while the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime measures 47.7mm x 16.07mm.
