"You might have heard of the very tiny film Avatar," Murray jokes. "James Cameron patented a technology where he was able to use a tiny, connected pad and move through his digital images in the movie to get authentic-feeling shots in order to create a frame for the digital scenes in the movie ."
Murray came to EA Sports from NFL Films which is the league's Emmy-winning documentaries arm, to begin work on 2014's Madden NFL 25. Murray was brought aboard specifically to tweak Madden's broadcasts to better resemble the type of cinematography football fans have come to expect from game's most epic moments and games -- and from the more Cinematic NFL Films. Soon after moving from Florida, Murray began implementing the VR camera system Cameron had patent-pending. Since since then, Madden's shows can be filmed exactly the same sequence , but from a variety of camera angles -- in various styles, each one true to life -- in order to give a different look to the game's appearance.
The big difference? "My previous room I was required to work in was the size of this carpet," Murray says, gesturing at a rug marked by gridiron lines and the EA Sports logo, which is at most the size of the floor of a closet. Murray is now working in a larger and much newer motion capture studio at the EA's central Orlando studio. This is where EA Tiburon has relocated in 2019. It was just a few days before the outbreak. The studio for motion capture, in fact, was finished just one day before this interview. Murray said.
The extra space means "thousands" of brand new scenes have been shot for Madden NFL 24 -- 700 in the week before a late May stage tour Murray adds, in addition to the more than 12.000 shots filmed in the 7 years the technology has been around. Murray believes that the previous Maddens have provided a variety animations, following the whistle or the halftime gun to keep its cinematics from becoming boring and predictable.
